She straightened before turning to head back up the beach and ran straight into a brick wall. Or at least, that’s what it felt like. She was suddenly lying on her back in the sand, looking up at the wispy white clouds in the pale morning sky and feeling more than a little dazed.
A dark silhouette moved into Alyssa’s field of vision and she blinked, trying to make out what on earth had knocked her off her feet.
“Sorry, beautiful. Here, let me help you.”
The deep masculine voice soothed Alyssa’s pounding head, and overlooking the inappropriate endearment, she accepted the proffered hand.
She was hauled to her feet as if she weighed nothing, which only resulted in the need to steady herself as her head spun. She extended one hand for balance and put the other to her brow. Maybe another run wasn’t such a good idea. Perhaps she should just head home.
“You okay, sweetheart?” There was that voice again.
“Mmm? Yeah, I’ll be fine.”
Obviously not trusting her judgement, the brick wall, which Alyssa had by now realised was another jogger, took her hand in his sturdy one and began brushing the sand from her lycra-covered backside.
“What the hell?” Alyssa turned and scooted a few steps away, yanking her hand from his grasp. “What on earth do you think you’re doing?”
“Only trying to help, gorgeous. Thought it was the least I could do after sweeping you off your feet.”
Oh yeah, this guy was all charisma.

A Healing Hand is a novelette by Monique Hall, set in Rockingham, Australia. While out on a ten-kilometer jog, Alyssa Martin is literally knocked off her feet when she collides with a brick wall in the shape of her former high school best friend’s brother (and womanizer), Dean Daniels. As they go their separate ways on the jogging path, Alyssa reluctantly accepts Dean’s request that she go out on a date with him. That night, Alyssa is fashionably late, leaving Dean to wonder if he had been stood up, but he suddenly finds actual feelings tugging at his chest when he sees her walk in. By the end of the evening, both Alyssa and Dean share a kiss, but Alyssa quickly pushes him away due to a secret she isn’t willing to share. After she stands him up the next morning, he goes to her home, only to find her looking very weak…
With the mystery of Alyssa’s secret evident from the first page, Monique Hall has found the perfect way to pique the reader’s interest. A Healing Hand has the right blend of romance, fun and friendship, accompanying a sadness that affects so many people’s lives. Each of the characters in the book is easy to relate to and emote with, including Alyssa’s mother, who is faced with the possibility of losing her daughter. The writing was so detailed that I was able to envision myself being there, witness to everything I read. It takes a true wordsmith to create such illusion, especially in a short story. I recommend this book to all readers who are fifteen years and over, as it deals with issues that may, some day, affect their own lives.

Life. Love. Romance. Adventure. What do all of these terms have in common? They are the words of expression that the authors used in telling their stories in Rocky Romance: A Serenity Romance Anthology by Serenity Press. Exactly what inspired this type of book? Rocky Romance: A Serenity Romance Anthology by Serenity Press was inspired by Rockingham Beach in Western Australia. To develop this collection of short stories, several local authors gathered to showcase their emotions, views, and takes on life. The stories contained in Rocky Romance: A Serenity Romance Anthology will leave you inspired.
There were several great stories that I enjoyed, but my favorite was A Healing Hand by Monique Hall. In life you never know how it’s going to turn out – you grow, you experience life, and then the unexpected happens. Alyssa had no clue that seeing her high school best friend Kate’s brother Dean Daniels (formerly known as Double D) again would turn out this way. Who would have known that beneath Dean’s bad boy image that he portrayed in high school he would turn out to be such a gem at this time of Alyssa’s adult life. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but trust me, you are going to enjoy not only this story but all the others in Rocky Romance: A Serenity Romance Anthology by Serenity Press.
